“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight." Proverbs 3:5-6
"The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So is with everyone born of the Holy Spirit." John 3:8
When you’re sixteen, you will hear the words “I love you.” It won’t escape your mothers lips, but from those lips that you’ve seen in your dreams from the last 6 months. And you’ll think you’ve found everything you could ever want, but when your heart is broken on the warm May morning you will realize that maybe they didn’t hang the stars in the sky, and maybe their eyes aren’t actually a mix of the summer sky and the ocean, maybe they’re just blue. And months will pass and in October your heart will still hurt but you’ll be happy they found someone new, and you’ll hope they’re happy even if you aren’t. Keep going.
When you’re seventeen, you will hear the words “I love you.” It won’t come out clear, but slurred and hurried due to alcohol and heavy breathing. And you’ll give everything you have to that night and those lips and you’ll lose a piece of yourself in that bed at that party your friends made you go to. No you won’t get that piece back, and you will cry when the phone doesn’t ring the next day, or the next. You’ll never wear that outfit again even thought you loved it, and eventually you’ll stop waiting for the phone to ring. Keep going.
When you’re eighteen, you will hear the words “I love you.” It will be said by your best friend, your parents, and your favorite teacher who taught English. You will be dressed in a cap and gown and uncomfortable shoes and when you walk up on the stage to receive that piece of paper you’ve been working towards for 12 years, you will be worried about tripping over the chord of the microphone but you wont and you will shake the hand of many people before you return to your seat flustered but relieved. And when it’s all over you will hug your best friends. Things are about to change. Will they change for the better or worse? You won’t know. But don’t be scared. You can’t stop time, so don’t waste your energy trying too. Keep going.
When you’re nineteen, you will hear the word “I love you.” Except this time, it will escape your lips, and it will not feel foreign as it rolls off your tongue. In front of you will be green eyes that shine emerald in the sun, and a crooked smile that makes you weak at the knees, and that crooked smile will kiss you with more passion than your seventeen year old self could have ever understood. And you’ll be happy. But no matter what happens when you’re twenty, or thirty-two, one thing will remain the same, keep going.
